Palm Pre

Manchmal gehen auf High-Tech-Messen die Ansichten über die Highlights der Show weit auseinander. Auf der Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2009 in Las Vegas waren sich aber quasi alle einig: Der Palm Pre war der Star in der Glitzerstadt in der Wüste Nevadas. Daher war es nur logisch, dass der Palm Pre zum Abschluss der CES gleich mit drei Preisen ausgezeichnet wurde: Er gewann zum einen die Auszeichnung “Best in Show CES 2009″, die gemeinsam von CNET und dem Messeveranstalter, der Consumer Electronics Association, verliehen wird. Wichtige für Palm ist vielleicht, dass auch die Besucher zu diesem Votum kamen und den Pre an die Spitze des “People’s Voice Award”. Und logischerweise stand der Palm Pre auch in der Kategorie “Cell Phones & Smartphones”.

Nach einem Gespräch mit Pam Deziel, die bei Palm Vice President Software Product Marketing ist, sehe ich eigentlich nur zwei Schwachpunkte beim Palm Pre. Der Hauptspeicher ist mit acht Gigabyte nicht gerade üppig bemessen. Und er lässt sich auch nicht erweitern. Mein iPhone hat 16 Gigabyte und ich muss ständig überlegen, welche Inhalte ich von dem Smartphone entfernen muss, um für neue Platz zu machen. Bei der Hälfte des Speicherplatzes kann das nervig werden.

Die zweite Limitierung betrifft die Software: Der Palm Pre kann nur mit Webanwendungen mit den Zutaten XHML, CSS und JavaScript programmiert werden. Das ist auf der einen Seite eine Stärke, weil damit das System schlank bleibt und von Beginn Millionen von Programmierern zumindest theoretisch gleich morgen loslegen könnten, Anwendungen für den Palm Pre zu schreiben, weil sie diese Standards ohnehin draufhaben. Es gibt allerdings keine Möglichkeiten, für den Palm Pre Programmierumgebungen wie Cocoa oder Sprachen wie Java oder C++ einzusetzen, bestätigte mir Pam Deziel auf der CES in Las Vegas. Daher wird es auf absehbare Zeit auf dem Palm Pre keine aufwändigen Spiele mit opulenter Grafik wie Cro-Mag Rally, Super Monkey Ball oder Enigmo geben. Deziel setzt aber darauf, dass JavaScript immer leistungsfähiger wird.

Die Entwickler müssen sich noch etwas gedulden, bis ein SDK von Palm auf dem Markt ist. “Wir haben bis zur CES oberste Priorität auf die Geheimhaltung der Details gelegt. Daher können wir uns erst jetzt an die Entwickler wenden”, sagte Deziel.

Doch zurück zu den CES-Awards: CNET-Redakteurin Bonnie Cha begründete die Entscheidung für den Palm Pre so:

Well, it was a combination of things. First, and most important in our opinion, the Palm Pre along with the new Palm Web OS, brings an innovative way to how you interact with your device and how it organizes information. The Deck of Cards feature truly makes multi-tasking on your smartphone a breeze, and the Synergy functionality pulls in all your personal management information (e-mail, contacts, and calendar) from various sources into one place. Sure, other devices and operating systems have made similar attempts, but from what we’ve seen, the Palm Pre is the first smartphone to truly deliver on this in a seamless way.

We also liked the best-of-breed design, as the Pre offers a multi-touch screen that rivals the iPhone and even one-ups Apple’s smartphone with a slide-out full QWERTY keyboard. The list of features is long and impressive, including a full HTML Web browser, a full range of wireless options, and multimedia capabilities. Palm will also offer an App Store and since the Palm Web OS was built with developers in mind, we expect the smartphone’s capabilities and uses will only expand.

It’s pretty evident that Palm put a lot of thought into the user interface, design, and features, as everything seamlessly works together to offer the best user experience and making the smartphone a really useful tool in your daily life. Obviously, this is a huge win for Palm, a company that has come under harsh criticism for its lack of innovation and struggles to keep up the competition, but it looks like Palm stepped up to the plate and hit one out of the park. It will be interesting to see where the Palm Pre stands in a year and whether it delivers on all this hype, but for now, we’ll let Palm bask in its victory.
